Benefits Of A Chicken Dust Bath
If you own chickens or are thinking about starting yourself a little flock you might want to read up on why giving your chickens a dust bath is beneficial to them and their health.
A happy chicken is more fun, and a happy chicken lays more eggs, that I do know as a fact. Chickens have dirt baths all the time but to do so they scratch up your garden, help them out by making one for them.
Dust baths are absolutely necessary: Naturally (i.e., in the wild or when free ranging), they’ll dig a shallow pit in suitable soil (the dustier the better), loosen it all up with their claws, and then roll around in it, fluffing it through to cover every possible spec of skin and feather. They prevent parasites such as mites and lice from finding a home in your chickens’ feathers and legs. It’s good to start your chickens off with good hygiene habits at a young age. Even week-old chicks will hop into the tray and squirm around and flap their wings. It’s healthy for them, keeps them busy and they are adorable to watch. Check out the tutorial.
